Abstract

|
This study investigated sexuality and intimacy of Korean transnational couples who spent substantial periods of time away from each other. In-depth interviews and a focus group were used to generate data that were analyzed using thematic analysis. The couples spoke of a lack of intimacy, loneliness, and a fear of spousal infidelity. To cope with those stresses, they relied on the idea of dualism, disconnecting the body and the mind in spousal sexual activity. They committed their energy to their parental roles as a way of ensuring the sexual exclusiveness of the spouse and of lowering their expectations of the marital relationship. The article concludes with a discussion of some of the sexual and intimacy challenges facing Korean couples.
